BEST OF DISTRICT

"Best of District" entries compete against entries from all four district high schools. There will be only one winner for each category: Technical Achievement, News Show, Students of the Month, Student Sports Announcer, Student Sports Sideline Reporter, Short Film/Movie, ESA, General Information News Pack and Documentary.

Unless otherwise noted, all entries should be submitted by the producer(s) ONLY.

*10 points will be deducted from the overall score of each entry for incorrect spelling.

TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT - (maximum 2 minutes) For outstanding achievement in the technical aspects of television production. This category may include individual crafts such as videography, animation, graphic design, editing, music arrangement or composition, scenic design, audio reproduction, lighting, special effects, etc.

 

Entry must be followed by a video narrative (maximum 5 minutes) from the producer. This portion of the entry must include b-roll and a voice over (must be the producer’s actual voice). The producer needs to describe how their Technical Achievement entry was created.
 
For example:

• What software was used?

• Was a template used?

• How was a particular effect achieved?

• What was their inspiration?

• Was it created using school or personal equipment and software?

 

Entries will be judged on the basis of concept and content, with emphasis on creativity and execution.

NEWS SHOW - The fall and winter news shows will be viewed and judged in their entirety and will serve as each school’s entry.


Each of the 8 sections below will be judged using a scale of 1-5: (1) poor, (2) fair, (3) good, (4) very good and (5) excellent.

 
A maximum of 40 points will be given to each the fall and winter news shows for a grand total of 80 points.
 
  1. The news shows must be submitted by the assigned deadline to receive the full 5 points.  News shows that are submitted late will receive 0 points in this section.

    1. Fall News Show: due by December 9, 2016

    2. Winter News Show: due by March 17, 2017

  2. Features in-studio presentation (not news packages) of news events in the areas of athletics, academics, extra-curricular or community service.  Helps positively promote the school, staff and students.

  3. High quality, appealing graphics that contribute to the overall quality of the show.  Graphics are used at appropriate times throughout the show.  Graphics have a look and feel that are consistent with the theme of the show.  There will be a 1 point deduction for each misspelled graphic that will be no greater than 5 total points.

  4. Hosts, correspondents and reporters conduct themselves in a professional manner, wear appropriate and professional attire and they are comfortable in front of the camera.

  5. The studio is used for the open and close of the program; introduces news packages and segments.  Demonstrates the use of multiple cameras in varied and creative ways.  Set is appealing, professional and matches the theme of the program.  Lighting is effective and professional.

  6. News packages report on a single school-related event or activity in the areas of either athletics, academics, extra-curricular or community service.  News packages should be engaging.  B-roll should be high quality, varied and relevant to the topic.  Audio levels should be clean.  Editing should be clean and effective.

  7. Music contributes to the effectiveness of the program.  Audio is mixed well and the levels are matched throughout the entire news show. Microphones are placed properly on the talent.

  8. Overall presentation of the news show.



STUDENTS OF THE MONTH - (maximum 6 minutes) Entry must be submitted as three separate unedited segments from three of the seven months. Each of the three shows must be identified at the beginning by a basic five second graphic noting the month of the show. Only one entry per school.


The following criteria for Students of the Month will be used:

  1. Creativity of series

  2. Clean, effective editing

  3. Graphics contribute to effectiveness of program

  4. Music contributes to effectiveness of program

  5. Quality of audio and video

  6. Positive presentation of featured students

  7. Overall execution and presentation



STUDENT SPORTS ANNOUNCER - Only student announcers that have worked with LDTV Sports during the 2015-2016 school year are eligible for this category. These students are automatically entered in this category and do not need to submit an entry.


The following criteria will be used:

  1. Informative and professional announcing skills

  2. Appropriate camera presence of announcer

  3. Knowledge of game, event, athletes and coaches

  4. Overall presentation



STUDENT SPORTS SIDELINE REPORTER - Only student sideline reporters that have worked with LDTV Sports during the 2015-2016 school year are eligible for this category. These students are automatically entered in this category and do not need to submit an entry.


The following criteria will be used:

  1. Informative and professional sideline reporting skills

  2. Appropriate camera presence of sideline reporter

  3. Knowledge of game, event, athletes and coaches

  4. Overall presentation



DOCUMENTARY – (minimum 3 minutes – maximum 5 minutes) A work presenting political, social, or historical subject matter in a factual and informative manner and often consisting of actual news clips or interviews, accompanied by narration.


The following criteria will be used:

  1. Camera technique, set-up and shots

  2. Quality of audio (natural sound, sound effects, music, narration, etc.)

  3. Appropriate use of staging area (lighting, backdrop)

  4. Clean, effective editing

  5. Graphics contribute to presentation (titles, lower thirds, credits, etc.)

  6. Message is effectively presented

  7. Documentary demonstrates a thorough amount of research

  8. Overall presentation



SHORT FILM/MOVIE – (minimum 3 minutes – maximum 5 minutes) A work with a script and actors that tells a story.


The following criteria will be used:

1. Camera technique, set-up and shots

2. Quality of audio (dialogue, narration, natural sound, sound effects, music, etc.)

3. Appropriate use of sets/locations (lighting, backdrop)

4. Clean, effective editing

5. Graphics contribute to presentation (title sequence, credits, etc.)

6. Story is effectively presented

7. Overall presentation



ESA - (maximum 2 minutes) The winners from the four Best of School ESA awards will compete in this category. Entry must be an educational service announcement with a goal to convey, demonstrate or inform the audience about a particular topic.


The following criteria will be used:

  1. Clear presentation of message

  2. Clean, effective editing

  3. Effective use of audio (music, voice over, natural sound)

  4. Creativity

  5. Overall presentation



GENERAL INFORMATION NEWS PACKAGE - (maximum 3 minutes) The winners from the four Best of School General Information News Package awards will compete in this category. Entry must be a package reporting on a single event or activity in the areas of either athletics, academics, extra-curricular or community service.


The following criteria will be used:

  1. Informative presentation of event or activity

  2. Audio levels are even and clear

  3. Clean, effective editing

  4. Appropriate appearance of guest/talent on camera
